Forklift trucks are crucial to logistics operations, but the risks are high for those operating and working alongside them.
Between 2018-19 the number of forklift truck related injuries increased at an alarming rate with the following statistics recorded:
- Five people were hospitalised every day with
life-changing injuries
- The number of serious injuries increased by one third,
rising from 1,000 to 1,300
- 5,700 RIDDORS and 12 fatalities were all directly attributed
to forklift accidents
- More than half of those injured (57%) were pedestrians.
The need for effective safety procedures and PPE equipment is self-evident, they prevent death and serious injuries.
Changes to the sentencing guidelines for health and safety and corporate manslaughter offences mean that larger companies can be fined up to £10 million - possibly unlimited fines for special cases. The guidelines also acknowledge having effective health and safety measures in place and a good accident record will reduce any fine issued.
A key change in safety culture is realising that safety is not a drain on resources but an invaluable investment to safeguard the lives and wellbeing of staff and visitors.
